Tanager Lodge Tibetan Camp is a one-week summer program for Tibetan children. Located in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State, the camp, which began in 2004, provides an opportunity for Tibetan girls and boys (ages 6 to 16) to broaden their understanding of Tibetan culture and gain an appreciation for the natural world. Parents and other adult volunteers are also welcome.

The focus of the camp is on traditional camp and Tibetan activities, building community, and wilderness living. The camp is reached by a motorboat ride across Upper Chateaugay Lake, leaving behind roads, telephones, television, computers, and electricity. We all sleep in tents, swim in the lake, and eat our meals on open porches. Healthy outdoor living allows everyone to take full advantage of the rewarding program.

Thanks to Tsering Yangzom for this terrific 5-minute story on Tanager Lodge Tibetan Camp. It was first broadcast on NPR on October 16, 2007, the day before the Dalai Lama received the Congressional Gold Medal.
